At Riley's Mechanical & More in Fingal Bay, we recently completed a comprehensive custom exhaust upgrade and glow plug service on this classic “Troopy”, a diesel 70 Series Toyota LandCruiser. This case highlights the careful, structured approach we follow - delivering enhanced performance and reliability, while maintaining the quality and care expected from a Repco-Authorised Service centre.
When the customer brought in the 70 Series LandCruiser, our first task was a full inspection of the exhaust and diesel systems. We performed a detailed check of the existing exhaust path, assessing the manifold, header/extractor connections, piping, muffler, hangers and joints. Simultaneously, we reviewed the condition of the glow plugs and relevant electrical/ignition systems to verify operational efficiency and readiness for a diesel upgrade. This initial diagnostic stage ensures we understand exactly what’s needed - and safeguards against surprises once the upgrade begins.
With inspection complete, we drafted a tailored plan for the custom exhaust system and glow plug refresh. The design considered the 70 Series’ diesel engine characteristics, the owner’s driving use (daily driving and occasional off-road or towing), and the balance between performance improvements, engine reliability, and acceptable noise/vibration levels. The plan included fabricating or sourcing appropriately rated exhaust extractors and a Redback high-flow muffler system suited for the LandCruiser’s displacement and exhaust flow. For the glow plug service, we planned to replace all plugs to ensure consistent cold-start performance and smoother diesel combustion - critical for longevity and responsiveness.
Once parts and components were ready, the team at Riley's Mechanical & More proceeded with the upgrade. Working carefully in the workshop, the original exhaust manifold and piping were removed, and new extractors installed, followed by custom-bent piping to fit the chassis and layout of the LandCruiser. The Redback high-flow muffler and tail-pipe were then mounted, with secure hangers and heat-resistant joins to withstand diesel exhaust temperatures and long-term use.
The glow plug set was also swapped out. Each old plug was removed, and new ones installed using correct torque specs and sealing methods. Once installed, the ignition/starting system was tested thoroughly, verifying cold-start reliability, idle smoothness, and proper integration with the exhaust upgrade.
After the mechanical work was done, we carried out a comprehensive test drive and performance check. This included engine start performance (cold and warm), smoothness at idle, throttle response, exhaust sound levels, and checking for leaks or exhaust fumes intrusion. We also monitored fuel consumption and diesel engine response under varied load conditions - ensuring that the upgrade delivered real-world benefits without compromising comfort or compliance.
The finished LandCruiser left our workshop with improved exhaust flow, a deeper but controlled exhaust note, stronger engine response on diesel fuel, reliable cold-start performance thanks to refreshed glow plugs, and peace of mind provided by the nationwide warranty coverage.
